Does your loved one struggle with their medications? Maybe sometimes you find a pill lying on the counter and they are unsure where it came from. Or do you notice that they are suddenly having a lot of blood pressure problems or needing to be seen frequently? These can all be signs and symptoms of medication issues or signs and symptoms that medications are not being taken correctly. Medication management and the misuse of medications is the number one reason why our seniors are hospitalized. Medications can cause drops in blood pressure and changes that can lead to serious illnesses or outcomes.
Our registered nurse team specializes in three levels of medication services. We are a comprehensive licensed agency, so there are no skills that we cannot address.
Our registered nurses train all of our caregiving staff extensively on medication administration, medication rights, the seven rights to safety and success, different types of medications, how they are administered, and when to call and report a concern.
We offer medication reminding. Medication reminding is simply letting our senior know that it is nine o’clock and time to take their medications. Medication reminding services are for people who cognitively know what they take and why they take it.
Medication assistance can be verbal or non verbal cues to assist with medications. However, our senior client must still be able to tell us the correct medication they are taking and what it is for. For example, Mr. Smith has a hand that is weak and contracted. He cannot open the medication bottles because the tops are too tough to open with the safety locks. We can assist Mr. Smith by opening the tops of his medication bottles or getting them down from the shelf.
Last but not least is medication administration. Medication administration is a set of services that is overseen by a registered nurse. It is for our clients who are not cognitively able to understand what medications they take, when they take them, or why they take them. They are required to have additional support. Sometimes families can take charge of medication administration. Other times an agency can assume this responsibility under the oversight of a registered nurse.
Statistics have proven that if a senior client has more than twelve medications, they are at high risk for hospitalization, medication errors, and complications related to polypharmacy. It is very important that our seniors have consistent and accurate documentation and records of medications. We assist with all of these aspects and can provide monthly medication fill services as well, such as Phillips medication dispensers, Alexa reminders, and other computer or automated timed services and devices.

With regular assessments every 90 days, medication fill services, and automated reminders (like Alexa alerts or Philips dispensers), families don’t have to guess if mom or dad took their meds. Medication reminding and assistance are covered in our Plan One. There are no additional fees. If a registered nurse is required because of extreme cognitive issues, we work with the families to assign our Plan Two. However, we do not charge any additional nursing fees or monthly charges on top of that.
At Advanced Care Life Services, every ninety days we assess our seniors’ safety with medications. The following questions are helpful. Mom, can you tell me what medications you take and when you take them? If she is able to properly give you a list of all her medications, then you can ask her, do you know what this medication is for and why you are on it? If there is any gap in understanding or in recognizing how to read a label, these are clear indicators that additional support may be required.
